Led by Ben, the Grafting workshops are about teaching the local population how to join tissues of plants so that they continue their growth together.

This technique has multiple benefits for the people of Dewe including:

  • The ability to induce fruitfulness without the need for completing the juvenile phase.
    • A mango tree which usually takes 10 to 12 years to give a fruit, will this time only take 2 to 3 years;
  • This creates smaller fruit trees and provide more fruit per unit of land, higher quality fruit, and reduce the danger of accidents by harvest crews working on ladders;
  • It is commercially the most cost-effective way of raising a particular type of plant.

And the most interesting part? You can graft an orange tree to a lemon tree to have a plant giving you both fruits! Quite Frankestein style, isn’t it?…
